The 2017 African Company of the Year Competition, an annual event and culmination of JA’s highly acclaimed Company Program which delivers entrepreneurship education to high school youth across Africa, held in Johannesburg, South Africa from the 6th – 8th of December 2017.
The Flourishers, a JA Nigeria agricultural business company flew to South Africa to represent Nigeria at the competition. Their products included variations of flour, such as: beans flour, sweet potato flour and unripe plantain flour. The student company also created a highly popular breakfast granola and a student mathematics app.
The competition had over 40 student entrepreneurs across Africa with delegates from Botswana, Gabon, Kenya, Mauritius, Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Student companies presented their innovative products to a panel of Judges made up of business professionals and influencers from across Africa.
The Flourishers enjoyed the opportunity to present (and defend) their business to global executives from Citi, FedEx, Facebook, Delta Air Lines and many others. One of the judges expressed interest in importing some of Team Flourishers products into South Africa, which made our students very happy indeed! Our deep appreciation goes to FirstBank Nigeria for sponsoring our champions to represent Nigeria, and South African Airways for providing transportation support to Johannesburg.
