JAN REGIONAL COMPANY OF THE YEAR COMPETITION: HIGHLIGHTS

Every year, Junior Achievement Nigeria hosts a flagship JA Company Program competition which brings together students from across various regions to compete for the Company of the Year Award and an opportunity to represent Nigeria in the African competition.

Over the past three months, we have successfully held regional competitions across Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Jos, Ebonyi, Anambra, Oyo, Imo, Ogun and Uyo featuring the brightest minds and innovations of our students.

In Lagos, Janet and John College were announced as winners of this years’ edition for their innovative software application – The Skools App which is used to bridge the communication gap between parents, teachers and students. Ibadan witnessed 12 student companies competing for the regional champion and amidst all presentations, Wesley College came tops with their household clock and wall bricks made from domestic waste materials.

Abuja’s competition was also stiff with 15 student companies vying for the top position. After carefully listening to the presentations and looking at the annual reports of student teams, Community Staff Secondary School secured the first position for developing “Bloodgrade” an integrated web-application that connects blood donors to patients. In Jos, Rhemaville Christian Academy emerged winner for developing an educational software application to guide students in selecting careers of their choice.

The South South and South East states also saw winners emerge from Anambra, Ebonyi, Imo, Port Harcourt, Enugu and Uyo. Topping Anambra’s list of student companies was Christ the King Secondary School which produced an eco-friendly generator. CSMT Secondary School clinched first position in Ebonyi for developing a software application, an online store to connect buyers and sellers of local rice in their community. In Imo, Alvana Group of Schools came first position for producing a unique solar-powered Mini Inverter.  In Port Harcourt, Brookstone Secondary School took 1st place for producing a safety jacket which sends distress signals to a pre-programmed security agency when a button is pressed. College of Immaculate Conception came tops in Enugu for developing an online market for local stores in the environs. Lastly, Uyo’s grand winner was Government Technical College for designing a water lever indicator that automatically switches on the water pumping machine when water is low and switches it off when full.

Well done to all the participating schools for a great job, and congratulations to the winners! We look forward to meeting the teams during NCOY in October. We are grateful to Citi Foundation, FirstBank Nigeria Limited, ACT Foundation, ANGUZ Partners and US Consulate for sponsoring the implementation of Company Program in several states across Nigeria. Up next: National Company of the Year competition!!
