Junior Achievement Nigeria (JAN) has partnered with Union Bank for the fourth consecutive year to empower fifty (50) girls across various regions from Nigeria in the 10th  edition of the Leadership, Empowerment Achievement & Development  (LEAD) Camp which took place from July 7th – 13th in Lagos.

The mission of LEAD Camp is to inspire and empower young girls to become high-achieving women leaders. This year’s event featured notable female leaders from the private and public sectors in Nigeria who volunteered their time and resources to inspire and empower the girls.

The weeklong event was exciting for the girls who got to spend time learning from seasoned panel speakers including Yewande Thorpe, Mireia Carcole, Kehinde Oyesiku, Funke Bucknor-Obruthe, Funto Ibuoye, Yetunde Williams, Ngover Ihyembe-Nwankwo, Sola Adesakin, Adaora Ude, Helen Brume, Ololade Awogbade, Mojolaoluwa Aderemi-Makinde, Lola Aworanti-Ekugo, Enor Izomor, ZeeZee Ihe-Okuneye, Marcy Dolapo Oni, Amin Ameen, Yoanna ‘Pepper’ Chikezie, Linda Quaynor, Abiola Desalu and Dr. Abimbola Banu-Ogundere. It is interesting to note that our panel sessions this year were moderated by JAN alumni Timoni Akindolie, Oduolayinka Osunloye, Orode Uduaghan, and volunteer, Lily Aninyei.

Also at LEAD Camp 2019 were Kanyin Adio-Moses of Etiquette by Kanyin, Femi Luther-Abegunde of Kainos Edge Consulting, Sanitary Aid for Nigerian Girls team, and Dr. Toke Oke who all facilitated the development sessions on etiquette, critical thinking and problem solving, personal hygiene and sexual reproductive health. The week also featured Foluso Gbadamosi and Union Bank’s Women Empowerment Hub (WEHub) mentors who facilitated a vision board exercise session after which the girls crafted their own personal vision boards. It was also great to have Aduke Gomez, Author of ‘Adventures of Lara and Dara’ and Biola Alabi of Biola Alabi Media who contributed a book reading session and movie screening of ‘Lara and the Beat’ to the camp. Thank you for the free books for our girls and their teachers!

As part of the achievement sessions during the camp, the girls got an opportunity to be mentored by Kaylah Oniwo of Cool FM Lagos, Amarachi Ubani of Channels TV, Mary Edoro of BellaNaija, Ntianu Obiora of Pulse Media and Funmi Oyaide of Silverbird Television. Participants also visited the media organizations for a job shadow experience and to present their projects for broadcast.

We are deeply grateful to our Headline sponsor, Union Bank, for sponsoring yet another edition of the camp. We also thank all our program facilitators and in-kind sponsors Cowrywise, Etiquette by Kanyin, Air Peace, Kainos Edge Consulting Limited, Sanitary Aid for Nigerian Girls, GB Foods, Coca-Cola, Nuli Juice Company and IBM for helping us give the girls an experience that will forever shape their lives! Special thanks to the JAN planning committee, led by the National Program Manager, Ugonna Achebe and Marketing and Communications Officer, Ololade Ogeye.
